A new treatment for that can work within 10 minutes has launched in the UK.
It is a gel called Eroxon, and has been clinically proven to work for people with mild to severe erectile dysfunction.
Eroxon is made by Futura Medical, a pharmaceutical company based in the UK.
Eroxon is applied to the head of the penis, where the gel evaporates, with this evaporation stimulates vascular and neural nerve endings by rapidly cooling and warming the area. This triggers the release of nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, therefore increasing blood flow to the penis and causing an erection.
The release of nitric oxide is also how other erectile dysfunction (ED) treatments such as Viagra work, but they have the disadvantage of relaxing blood vessels in the entire body, since they are taken orally and not applied directly. This can lead to side effects such as nausea, dizziness and headaches.
These side effects mean people with pre-existing health conditions, such as heart and liver disease, cannot take oral ED pills. They are also not safe for people who have recently had a stroke, and cannot be taken with some prescription medicines.
Dr Hilary Jones, who regularly appears as a health expert on ITV, told: “The word ‘breakthrough’ is often used in health headlines, but new treatments which are truly groundbreaking come along far less frequently. Eroxon is an innovative therapy which has the potential to change the lives of millions of men with erectile dysfunction.”
Dr Catherine Hood, a sexual health specialist, added: “When they were launched back in the 90s, PDE5i medicines were a game-changer, but they are not an option for many men due to pre-existing health conditions, interactions with their prescription medicines or simply because of the time they take to work.”
In a 12-week clinical trial of 250 people, two out of three reported a significant improvement in their ability to achieve and maintain an erection. The figure rose to 80 per cent for those with severe erectile dysfuncion.
The gel is available over the counter, without a prescription. Eroxon costs £24.99 for a pack of four single-use tubes, and is available from Boots stores and online.

LONDON — As the global drug industry continues to push ahead with new products, the company that invented a new type of heart drug, Viagra, is set to face the same challenge as it faces in the fast-going erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment.
Viagra, the first widely prescribed ED drug to treat impotence, has become the world’s fastest-selling drug in the US, while Cialis, the drug’s second-best seller, has become the most popular name for the drug. But with the launch of the new drug and its introduction into the market, it’s clear that the company is in for a strong competitor — Cialis.
“We’re not just selling new products; we’re launching them,” said David Brennan, CEO of Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that invented the drug. “The launch of Viagra will take a huge leap of faith.”
A spokeswoman for Cialis declined to make any specific comment on the launch of the new drug, but said that the drug has had “a really remarkable impact on the lives of many of our patients.”
In the US, Viagra was approved for use as the first drug for impotence after clinical trials showed the drug could help men who were impotent. In the UK, Viagra was approved for use as the first drug for erectile dysfunction after clinical trials showed the drug could help men who were not erect, the MHRA said. But it was unclear whether Cialis would be approved for use as the first ED drug after clinical trials showed the drug could help men with other conditions. But, as the drug’s popularity grew, it was not the only treatment that Pfizer set its sights on.
It was the product’s first oral treatment — the first oral therapy for erectile dysfunction — that was the focus of a big search, but was soon overwhelmed by the search for a new treatment for impotence.
Pfizer’s decision to launch Cialis in the US, however, came as the company’s product launch in the UK began in earnest with a campaign to warn doctors of the drug’s dangers.
One such campaign was the campaign for erectile dysfunction treatment. It was aimed at doctors who have been diagnosed with impotence by their primary care doctor. In response, Pfizer said it was seeking information from the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to warn about the drug’s safety.
The NICE found that Cialis’ side effects could be caused by certain foods and drugs, including those containing nitrates, which are widely used in the treatment of angina and heart failure.
The NICE urged the public to talk to their doctor about the drug’s potential dangers and warnings and urged patients to seek medical advice if they have questions about the drug’s side effects.
The drug’s US launch, however, was delayed for several months by Pfizer’s own decision to launch the drug in the UK. After a year of delays, the drug’s US launch in the UK was completed in the autumn.
A spokeswoman for Cialis said that the company’s launch of Viagra was a “reminiscent of the drug”. “We feel it’s important to emphasize that the safety and effectiveness of Viagra have not been thoroughly tested in the US and the UK,” she said.
